Annual
Squash Tour 2009 |
 |
Ian, Archie, Steve
and Mike's annual squash tour took them to Kettlwell
in the Yorkshire Dales.
Saturday's
route took them from Kettlwell up the Wharfedale
valley to Buckden and over the hill (no
we are not over the hill) to
Litton then down the Littondale valley to Arncliffe
and back over the top to Kettlwell. A long day
for Steve with his dodgy hip which was eased
by a lunch time libation at the pub in Litton.
On
Sunday they took it easy with a walk in what
should have been a forest above West Burton but
ended up as a walk over a lunar landscape as
the forest had been felled a year or two earlier.
Having quenched their thirst at lunch time in
West Burton, a stroll along the Aysgarth falls
was rounded off with a locally made ice cream
before returning to Kettlwell.
That evening Mike
and Archie had liver and bacon on a bed of bubble
and squeak. They were so impressed with the meal
that they have not stopped talking about it since.
By Monday morning Steve's hip was in need of
replacement so Ian, Archie and Mike left him
in Buckden before up to Cray and around to Yockenthwaite
returning to Buckden via Hubberholme to count
mice in the church. Meanwhile Steve had not sat
around idle all morning. He photographed everything
in Buckden and then was chatted up by someone's
great grandmother before the lads returned to
rescue him.
The weather was so good all weekend
that there was talk of pulling a sicky and stopping
another day but in the end it was decided they
should return home in the hope that they would
be let out again next year.

Sterling
of Hereford Summer Team Squash 2009 Tournament |
Hereford
Whitecross Squash and Tennis Club recently held
their Stirling of Hereford Summer Team Handicap
Tournament. Held over eight weeks, five
teams have been battling it out to be crowned
squash champions 2009. Due to the summer holidays
the original twenty players swelled to nearly
forty as substitutes were drafted in. The tournament
opened with a pig roast, organized by Annie and
Dan, so there were plenty of spectators as the
squash preceded the roast. As the competition
is handicapped everyone has a chance to win but
the eventual winning team was Team C captained
by Dan Little and represented by Tommy Burton,
Bill Youl Dudley Tyler, Roy Gough, Matt Lees
and Dave Thompson. The winners received squash
balls courtesy of England Squash and Racketball
and all the competitors had tee shirts from Stirling
of Hereford.

Hereford Whitecross squash team entertained The David Lloyd Centre from Bromsgrove this week. The new team shirts sponsored by Baker Tilly are working wonders for the team who have now won three matches on the trot. The opening game was going well for Dave Thompson, taking the first game 9/1, until he pulled his hamstring so will be out of first team action for a while. Steve Hill looked to be cruising to an easy victory against John Moody. In the third game John leveled the score at 8/8 but Steve changed up a gear to win the game and match 9/5,9/2,10/8. Tommy Burton beat Jim Moseley 9/5,9/5,9/0 and Rob Reid also beat his opponent 9/3,9/1,9/0. Hereford Whitecross Won by 4 ties to 1 earning 13 points plus 5 bonus points for winning the match.

Hereford Whitecross Club had 34 entries for the 2007-8 season annual squash handicap tournament. Several new and junior members entered for the first time, two of them reached the finals. In the plate competition, for the first round losers, the final was contested by Dave Sandford and Dan Little. Dan had a thirty two point start so Dave had to concentrate as the American scoring means that every point counts, if you make a mistake that is a point to your opponent. In the end Dave's experience and fitness showed as he won 3-0. In the main competition Steve Hill had a battle with Jack Bishop, nearly thirty years separated them. Although Jack was the younger player his fitness could not make up for Steve's determination, Steve finally won 3-1 in a very entertaining match. |

Terry Mac Squash Handicap Competition 2008 |
|
|
The Terry Mac Handicap Competition was held over two weekends with the Finals of the full and plate knockouts held on Saturday 12th January
Both finals went to 5 games with Dave Thompson fighting back from 2 games down to win 3 - 2 against Colin Powell in the Plate event. The full competition was an all Allman affair with brothers Dave and Tom fighting it out. Younger brother Tom went two games up but Dave clawed back the next two games as Tom seemed to suffer fatigue and Dave's extra power began to tell. Tom, however found extra reserves of determination and energy in the fifth to take the last game by the closest of margins at 17 - 16.
All in all, arguably the most entertaining finals since the competition commenced! |
